Three Steps to World Peace

Peace
Peace

How do we achieve World Peace? That would be nice to do. It would make the news less gloomy, and, let lots of people get on with living their once in a lifetime life the best they can. Maybe, some technology can help? I mulled this one over a long time ago when I was younger. I am pretty sure there are three things that we will need to develop...

Infinite Energy: An infinite accessible supply of clean energy.

A globally distributed infinite supply of clean energy will help a lot. Lets face it, this is pretty much the main reason for a load of the badness in World. I am pretty sure all the recent fighting is over access to the deposits of ancient dead animal materials we need to make us happy. The Gulf War, Syria, the Ukrainian Wars, the whole lot of them caused by one or other of the big boys making sure it is controlled and flowing.

This greasy stuff is amazing and done much to improve the quality of life of a lot of lucky people. So, I don't want to bash on it too hard... but the way it is spread unevenly across the World does tend to force people to do the wrong thing. So, we need to get off of it. We might also just wanna stop now so we can leave some in tank in case humanity needs to bootstrap itself again.

So come on science and engineering! We need an energy source the is cheap, clean, and, globally accessible to every nation. In the short term though, we definitely ought to be looking into alternative local forms of energy, and, probably seeing if we can cut back on it a bit.

I am pretty sure that is the first thing to tackle...

Matter Assemblers: Make whatever we want at the atomic level.

A load of matter replication tech is next on out list. You know what I mean. Like those replicator machines in Star Trek. Along with our clean energy supply we will be able to create everything we need: food, water, medicines, material goods, exotic matter...

I am not sure how this stuff is going to work... I am assuming it runs off some sort of nanotechnology. Little robots we can give a ton of atoms too and they build us what we want. We might need inputs to these machines, but, most of the stuff we want is probably mostly made of carbon, hydrogen, and, oxygen atoms anyways.

I guess any solution will work as long as it is efficient... maybe we can do lots with a shed load of chemistry and bio-chemistry in the short term? Also, lots of re-cycling too. Anyway, scientists and engineers - to action!

Great stuff. Everyone has access to infinite clean energy so we can make everything we need. We should all be pretty happy now? Do we have World Peace?

Unfortunately, there is still one big problem...

Virtual Reality: Some matter matters.

We are nearly there! Nice one scientists and engineers. There is just one final problem to wrap up. Unfortunately, there are just some things we might be unwilling or unable to replicate.

  1. Are you an unfortunate of unrequited love? - Replicating people might be a bit off. Most people probably wont be up for it and consider being replicated rather rude. Identity matters.

  2. Do you and your neighbour disagree what country you both share? - There is probably just not enough physical space for country cloning operations like this. Again, identity matters.

So, some form of fully submersive virtual reality is required. The only way out of these physical constraints is to go virtual. This might involve needles in our brains - we will have to wait see how the tech works out. Maybe, there will be some quantum solution to avoid that? Fingers crossed.

Anyway, the main thing is everyone will be happy. We can all have our little worlds exactly how we want it. With our infinite energy and access to matter replicators we can make as many of these as we need. . So...

QED. World Peace.

NB: There may be some side issues though... like the scientists and engineers might need to unlock all the secrets of the Universe and ensure they are simulated accurately. Otherwise, the worlds they built might not be fun for them. Maybe, they will be happy to stay behind anyways... they just need to be able to avoid falling in love with same things. We might also need some form of global AI to run everything in our absence and keep an eye us. However, everyone knows that 3 is much better number to arrive at than 4. So, I am going to ignore these caveats.

Final musings

I feel this is a solid answer. As a race we need to build The Matrix and then go live in it. It especially suits my materialist common sense view point. It unfortunately does not address any existential issues. Like, how about people who don't know what they want to be happy? What about people who have a bit of them that like to be unhappy? What even is happiness? Crumbs, we are a complex bunch.

Anyway, I think I will have to muse about that one a bit further. I think my man Aristotle has laid down and initial framework on that topic - Nicomachean Ethics, so that may be the place to start.
